Discovering Duomo

Discovering Duomo And the city

Florence is one of the most unique and charming cities in the world. Despite 2000 years of tumultuous history and clashes between the richest and most powerful families, Florence eventually became known as the birthplace of the Renaissance. In order to better understand the history surrounding the city, we will begin the tour by visiting Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, the dwelling of the family whose political involvement and economic investments in both art and philosophy helped establish the city that we now know today.  Next, we shall visit the Basilica of San Lorenzo, which has become a mausoleum for the Funebrei family, who restored the church in Renaissance style and contributed to the creation of many monuments.  Then, we will visit Piazza San Giovanni where we will see the Baptistery of San Giovanni as well as a hundred-year old column.  Afterward, we will proceed to Piazza del Duomo where we will admire both the inside and outside of one of the largest churches in the world:  Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.  We will then continue the walking tour with a visit to Piazza della Repubblica and to Piazza del Mercato Nuovo which hosts a major symbol of Florence: the Boar.  After meeting the boar, we will visit Piazza della Signoria where we will see the following:  Palazzo Vecchio the old courthouse, copies of famous sculptures like the David, and the Loggia dei Lanzi (an open air museum filled with sculptures.)  From outside on the street, we will follow the Vasari Cooridor, which is a secret passageway built by Vasari that leads from the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace (the last residence of the Medici family in the city.)  Following  the Vasari Cooridor will lead us to our final destinal:  Ponte Vecchio, the Old Bridge famous for beautiful jewelry vendors.
